The global boiler industry continues to advance at a remarkable pace, with several landmark projects reaching key milestones in recent weeks. According to industry analysis, the worldwide boiler market was valued at approximately $112.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $220.9 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate of 6.8%. The industrial boilers segment alone is expected to grow from $16.13 billion in 2025 to $17.23 billion in 2026, at a CAGR of 6.9%. This sustained growth reflects rising industrial steam demand, manufacturing expansion, and the accelerating replacement of aging infrastructure.

In the clean coal power segment, a major milestone was achieved on July 28, 2026, when the world's first 630°C ultra-supercritical demonstration unit-a 1,000 MW coal-fired power project-successfully entered commercial operation. This unit set multiple world records: the highest reheat steam temperature exceeding 630°C, the highest thermal efficiency exceeding 50% among coal-fired units, the highest operating pressure, and the lowest coal consumption rate. The project is expected to save 208,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 540,000 tons annually-18. With the engineering data and operational experience accumulated from this dual-unit project, China's 630°C ultra-supercritical thermal power technology, new materials, and equipment supply chain have reached full maturity, providing a complete engineering template for batch construction of similar units domestically and technology exports globally.

 

Another significant achievement came with the successful hydrostatic pressure test of the first domestic 1,000 MW opposed-firing tower-type boiler in early July 2026. The boiler's core pressure-bearing components were independently developed and manufactured domestically-8. This project represents the first large-scale engineering application of a million-kilowatt-class opposed-firing tower-type boiler, integrating the technical advantages of both tower arrangement and opposed firing-delivering flexible peak-shaving capability, operational economy, and low nitrogen oxide emissions. The successful hydrostatic pressure test, the most rigorous comprehensive verification of boiler pressure-bearing capacity, confirms that manufacturing quality meets all standards and lays a solid foundation for subsequent unit startup and grid connection. Upon full commissioning, the plant's total installed capacity will exceed 6,000 MW, generating an additional 8 to 10 billion kilowatt-hours annually.

 

In parallel, hydrogen-coal co-firing technology has emerged as a promising pathway for decarbonizing existing coal-fired units. In early July 2026, a major breakthrough was achieved when a 40 MW coal-fired boiler successfully demonstrated 50% green hydrogen co-firing by heat input ratio, along with 100% pure hydrogen combustion-a world first. This was achieved using a fully self-developed low-nitrogen burner designed specifically for hydrogen-coal co-combustion. The technology enables a 50% reduction in both coal consumption and carbon emissions, coupled with significant synergistic nitrogen oxide emissions reduction--28. This breakthrough paves a new pathway for coal-fired power units to achieve substantial carbon reduction.
